Monthly Meeting – May 2019

Our May meeting started off with a surprise guest!  Stewart Bailey is one of the founding members of IPMS Livonia (way back in the 1970’s).  He  shared a bunch of stories about the club’s early days, and his interesting career since then as a director and/or curator at several aviation museums across the country.  Stewart is currently the curator of the Lone Star Flight Museum in Houston, TX.   Thanks for coming to visit, Stewart!  Some of the interesting things we learned:

• Stew wasn’t there for the very first club meeting, but heard about about it through friends at school and attended the 2nd.
• There were disagreements about club shirts.  Some members of the club wanted T-shirts, and some wanted fancy shirts with epaulets.  Stew had some t-shirts printed, and no one ever brought the subject up again.
• Stew has walked inside the Spruce Goose’s fuselage.  And yes, it’s made of wood, but not timbers.  And not spruce.  It’s more of a birch laminate called ‘Duramold’.
• Howard Hughes’ nickname for the Spruce Goose was “Jesus Christ,” since those were the first words out of the mouths of individuals when Hughes took them into the hangar where the plane was being built.

We also met a new member, Mike Marsden, who paints larger monster figures.  Welcome Mike!

Our Model-of-the-Month contest had 19 models on the table.  As usual, there was some exceptional work.  Ian Dow stunned the room with his latest work and took the top spot.  You won’t want to miss the pics.
